Zanini-Connally
Residence(2002) - Topanga, CA
Set upon a promontory overlooking Topanga Canyon and the Santa Monica
Bay, this 3,000 square foot home incorporates contemporary aesthetics
with the principles of passive and active solar energy. |
| The spaces
are open to the panoramic views, are filled with natural light, and
are accessible to exterior terraces, balconies, and a sheltered courtyard. |
| The structure
is split-level, conforming to the contours of the natural slopes.
The lower levels are tucked into the hillside, providing thermal insulation
from the earth. The south-facing walls are glazed with dual glass
and allow light and warmth to penetrate the interiors. |
| The home is
heated with in-floor hot water tubes which provide consistent and
quiet thermal comfort. And, since the site is too remote to receive
full electrical service from the local utility company, the home receives
its electrical power from an array of solar photovoltaic panels and
a battery storage system. |
